Yup :) this compo was written by me for the el 3rd assignment. However, it wasn’t meant to literally criticize the Singapore government for its “laxation “in national security. This compo was written, solely to gain more marks for that one assignment, as well for pure entertainment. Viewer’s discretion is advised.
Suspense story on Mas Selamat
Singapore, a city that prevails as the world’s foremost nation in terms of the standard of the national security that we have. A county that is described by western observers as one in which security lapses were virtually unheard of. In such a country, how could someone as dangerous as Mas Selamat escape from the detention centre without even being noticed? Someone that had hatched a seemingly impossible plan to hijack a plane and crash it into Changi Airport. Or did he?
In Whitely Road detention centre this was almost impossible. A mere limping terrorist was simply no match for the impressive array of technology the Whitely Road detention centre had. Even previous attempts to escape by other “small fry” criminals have been futile. Thus, the question is, did Mas Selamat really escape?
According to the story told by the police to the media, the former JI leader was being led to a room where his family members were waiting when he asked to go to the toilet. He then fled without a trace.
Apparently, there are several obvious questionable points about this particular story which immediately raised a blogger storm on the internet. Many interesting “government conspiracy theories” soon surfaced. These included plausible stories which alleged that the internal security department deliberately allowed Mas Selamat to walk out of the prison without being caught in an attempt to use him as a bait to lure other terrorists who try to contact him to offer him assistance.
Among all of them, the theory that intrigued me the most was the one that claimed that Mas Selemat was likely to have been accidentally killed in a torturous attempt by the ISD to force him to reveal the names of other JI members. However, when his family came to visit him, the ISD could no longer hide the true story and wove a story to cover up his unintentional and fortuitous death.
This is a completely woven up story, based solely on an assortment of my own ideas and other interesting ideas that I found in the internet. Viewer discretion is advised. But who knows? Perhaps one day the headline on “The Straits Times” might simply scream:”Mas Selemat found dead in canal along Whitely Road!” Will that be the ending to this episode? Or will he never be found, banished into the fourth dimension, a world of sub-reality.
